Born in Tbilisi in 1964, at a time where avant-garde trends were not allowed yet, Gela
Patiashvili emerged as an artist in Tbilisi.
He was formed as such through his deep relationships with older and already
established artists coworking in art studios establishing an interesting community.
Avant-garde movements like abstractionism, conceptualism were still unacceptable.
Academic traditions were still prevalent in painting. The idea of independent thought,
which challenged social norms, was not yet fully embraced.
Gela first appeared in group exhibitions in 1988, presenting himself as a painter who
formed part of a group while at the same time precisely advocated for his individuality.
He is an artist who is in a permanent relation with the sublimation of colors. His
biography includes up to 40 group exhibitions and up to 15 solo exhibitions across
Europe and the American continent. His latest one-man show is notably featured in
Tbilisi's Museum of Fine Arts with "Where is our place?", in the national gallery with "We
Are Survivors...", and a poignant sculptural installation representing stray dogs in one of
Tbilisi's parks.
In his professional endeavors, his expertise extends to animation and cinematography.
He also works on texts. Classical music serves as his primary source of inspiration.
