PHILLIP GRECHULEVIC is a Tbilisi-based artist working in painting and visual arts. His practice explores states beyond conventional social interaction, focusing on internally driven imagery and perceptual shifts.
He studied at the Tbilisi State University of Culture and Arts (1996–2001), where he developed a foundation that continues to inform his evolving visual language.
Grechulevic has exhibited widely across Georgia and Germany. His solo exhibitions include Palais am Festungsgraben, Berlin; Galerie Drei hoch 3, Bremen; RAR Gallery, Berlin; and Nino Goge Gallery, Tbilisi. Recent projects, The Landscapes of Invisible (2023) and The Burden of the River (2024), were presented as part of the Collective Failure series at Tes Club, Tbilisi.
His work has also been featured in group exhibitions at institutions including the Georgian National Museum, Kunst im Turm, Charlottenburg Palace, and the international platform Kunstauktion 2007 – Gesicht der Zeit.
Alongside his artistic practice, he works as a freelance designer specializing in illustration and book cover design, and previously served as Director of Data Design Center in Tbilisi.
Artist Statement
The imagery (sakhekhat'ebi) forms a visual metaphor for states that do not manifest in typical social interactions. It is an exploration of space where the subject emerges in new, previously untapped positions. Here, form is liberated from its social role and transformed into a “non-form.”
Entering previously unknown states requires stepping beyond familiar boundaries. The process involves the application of new approaches: from the search for specific techniques to the manifestation of imagery that does not fit into familiar associations.
The investigation of previously inactive zones of perception and their introduction into the visual plane may serve as an impulse for the viewer to discover a space for new states within themselves. By interacting with unusual forms, the observer may feel a resonance with layers that previously remained hidden or untapped.
