Mimo Mondal is a contemporary expressionist painter born in Mongla, Bangladesh, and based in Tbilisi, Georgia since 2011. Working primarily in watercolor and mixed media, his practice explores emotional landscapes, architectural abstraction, and the psychological resonance of place. His expressive brushwork and atmospheric compositions reflect a dialogue between memory, migration, and identity.
In 2014, Mondal became a member of the Georgian Artist Union, expanding his engagement within the regional art community. He completed his diploma studies at Grigol Robakidze University (2011–2012), where he further developed his conceptual and technical approach to painting. Mondal has presented his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Bangladesh, Georgia, the United States, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Italy, South Korea, and Germany. His works have been featured on Georgian television programs and in art publications. He received an honorary diploma from the Niko Pirosmani Artist Associate Union in recognition of his artistic contribution. Among his notable achievements is a personal exhibition at the Tbilisi City Assembly, marking an important milestone in his professional career.
Beyond his studio practice, Mondal plays an active role as a curator and cultural organizer. Since 2017, he has initiated and directed several major art events in Tbilisi, including the Tbilisi Watercolor Festival, Tbilisi Art Symposium, Summer Art Fest, Children's Art Festival, and Miniature Watercolor Festival. Through these platforms, he fosters international artistic dialogue and cross-cultural exchange.
In 2015, he founded MIMO Art Studio & Gallery in Tbilisi, creating an independent space dedicated to exhibitions, workshops, and artistic collaboration. The gallery has become a vibrant meeting point for artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts.
Through his painting and cultural initiatives, Mimo Mondal continues to build bridges between communities and expand the presence of contemporary expressionism within an international context.
Artist Statement
Mimo Mondal My work emerges from displacement, memory, and emotional geography. Born in Mongla, Bangladesh and living in Tbilisi, Georgia since 2011, I exist between cultures, languages, and landscapes. This in-between space is the foundation of my practice.
As a contemporary expressionist painter, I do not attempt to replicate reality; I reconstruct it through sensation. Architecture dissolves into atmosphere. Figures become fragments of memory. Cities transform into emotional terrains. My brushwork is intuitive and gestural, often layered with transparency and tension, reflecting both vulnerability and resilience. Watercolor and mixed media allow me to work with unpredictability — stains, bleeding edges, and fluid movement mirror the instability of migration and identity. I am interested in the dialogue between structure and spontaneity: controlled composition versus uncontrolled pigment. This tension reflects my personal journey of rebuilding stability in a foreign land while preserving the essence of my origins.
Having exhibited internationally and actively curating art initiatives in Tbilisi, my practice extends beyond the canvas. I view art as a platform for cultural connection — a space where diverse histories intersect and create new narratives.
Ultimately, my paintings are not representations of places; they are states of being. They invite viewers to enter a space where memory, emotion, and movement coexist — where geography becomes psychological and color becomes language.
